About

Urban Frementation

Urban Fermentation was conceived to help anyone learn how to make healthy delicious fermented foods, no matter where you live.  Whether it be in the country, an urban center or inner city.

This site is all about helping you add something fermented to your diet every day.  Whether it be a kefir smoothie, a spoon full of sauerkraut or some lacto fermented pickles.

Here you can learn from those who have gone before

All the fermentations which are written about on this site have been made and tested in a small urban location, with limited space, over a period of years so it is possible for you to make and enjoy your own fermentations at home as well.

We have studied and experimented with making a wide variety of fermentations including:

Kombucha

Kombucha

This was the first fermentation we started with after a seminar on how to make this great healthy drink we switched to making our own and never looked back.  This was 7 years ago and along the way we have learned a lot about has to make it just the way we like.

Kefir

Kefir is another fermentation which has gone through several stages of learning for us.  We found:

  • Ways to quickly move kefir along so little time was spent daily
  • Ways to use extra kefir
  • Which milk types we prefer and why
  • How to grow our kefir grains quickly

We have been making kefir nonstop for five years so we have the experience of having too many kefir grains or what to do when you go on holidays along with many other issues beginners experience.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is an easy first time ferment which has been a regular addition to our fermentation routine.  It is great to experiment with.  There are thousands of recipes online and every day it is growing including this one.

For anyone who is interested in fermentation Urban Fermentation is a great place to start and to continue adding knowledge to your fermentation journey.

We are continually learning new and interesting fermentations like miso, tempeh and anything else we find which could be made at home with little or no equipment and without an over-abundance of produce which needs to be preserved for the winter.

Here at urban fermentation you can learn how to ferment in small spaces in an old pickle jar using only a kitchen knife and a cutting board.

So join us. Fermentation is not difficult to do, is a healthy way to eat and is fun.
